Tapestry of Voices brings together Alice Burnhope, Divya Sharma, Holly Hallawell, Sarah Waters and Yahvi Duggal, five contemporary artists working across diverse textile techniques and materials. Through their individual practices, the artists explore how textiles can preserve personal and collective memories, reflect cultural traditions and express experiences of belonging, migration and change.

From collaborative textile sculptures and large-scale installations to handwoven tapestries, felted forms and experimental biomaterials, the exhibition highlights the evolving role of textiles in contemporary art. Drawing on inherited knowledge, everyday rituals, natural landscapes and lived experiences, the works offer different perspectives on the relationship between materials, people and place.

Presented as the culmination of Art Voyage Biennial’s wider Tapestry of Voices programme, supported by Arts Council England with funding from the National Lottery, the exhibition connects contemporary artistic practice with community participation, creative development and cultural exchange.

About the Exhibition

At the heart of Tapestry of Voices is the idea of textiles as a living archive, preserving personal memories, cultural traditions and experiences that are not always captured through written histories. Through the processes of making, from repeated techniques to the transformation of materials, textiles become a way of passing knowledge across generations and connecting the past with the present.

The five participating artists explore this concept through weaving, embroidery, feltmaking, sculpture and experimental material practices. Drawing on personal experiences, inherited traditions, migration and relationships with the natural world, their works reveal how textiles can express identity, belonging and connections between people, cultures and places.

The exhibition also considers the evolving role of textiles in contemporary art. Moving beyond traditional associations with domestic craft, the artists reinterpret familiar techniques through contemporary approaches, exploring new possibilities for artistic expression while reflecting on memory, sustainability and cultural heritage.
