Holly Hallawell

2001

London, England

Holly Hallawell is a London-based textile artist specialising in hand-weaving. Using the loom as her canvas, her practice explores our growing disconnection from the natural world and the interconnectedness of all life through abstract, textural tapestries inspired by natural forms and processes.

Drawing inspiration from her immediate surroundings, Holly observes natural phenomena such as knotted roots, branching structures and layers of rock strata, translating their forms, rhythms and textures into woven compositions. The interlacing of warp and weft allows her to interpret the subtleties of these organic structures, creating works that move between abstraction and recognisable traces of the landscapes and living systems that inspire them.

Self-taught as a weaver, Holly has developed a freeform and intuitive approach that moves beyond the conventional structure of the loom. Rather than following a predetermined pattern, she works freely through the warp and weft, gradually building shape, texture and movement while leaving areas of transparency that allow light to become part of the work. This slow and responsive process enables each tapestry to evolve organically through the act of making.

Material is central to Holly’s relationship with the natural world. Alongside linen, cotton, wool and nettle fibres, she incorporates foraged materials directly into her weavings, allowing fragments of the environments that inspire her to become physically embedded within the cloth. Through this combination of natural fibres and gathered materials, her works consider not only how nature can be represented, but how it can become an integral part of the artwork itself.

At the heart of Holly’s practice is an invitation to slow down, observe and reconsider our relationship with the environment. Through tactile surfaces, organic forms and moments of openness and light, her woven works create spaces of tranquillity and reflection, encouraging a renewed awareness of the connections between people, materials and the wider natural world.
