ARTIST

Laleh Memarardestani

1972

Tehran, Iran

Laleh Memarardestani is a Tehran-based multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans drawing, painting, printmaking and textile art. Working between abstraction and representation, her work explores the human form, nature and transformation through a distinctive visual language shaped by line, material and a minimalist sensibility.

Drawing has remained central to Laleh’s practice throughout her career, functioning as both a means of observation and a deeply personal form of expression. Her works often occupy a space between recognisable forms and abstraction, where figures and organic shapes are gradually reduced, transformed and distilled. Lines act simultaneously as structure and expressive gesture, creating compositions that move between fluidity, stillness and silence.

The human body has been a recurring source of inspiration in her work, approached as an organic form connected to nature and as a vehicle through which to consider interior and spiritual experience. Across drawing, painting and printmaking, Laleh explores processes of metamorphosis and reduction, allowing forms to move beyond literal representation. In more recent works, her engagement with textiles and mixed media extends these concerns into material and tactile forms, bringing together drawing, surface, stitching and fabric.

Laleh studied Graphic Design at Azad University of Art and Architecture in Tehran before continuing her artistic education in the UK, completing an HND in Illustration at Newcastle College and a Certificate in Life Drawing at Northumbria University. This background across graphic design, illustration and life drawing has informed a multidisciplinary practice in which observation, composition and the expressive possibilities of line remain closely interconnected.

Her work has been exhibited extensively in Iran and internationally. Solo exhibitions include SOMA-SYS at Bavan Gallery and The Grown, The Vocalist and Observatory at Etemad Gallery in Tehran, alongside earlier exhibitions in Paris and Dubai. She has participated in international group exhibitions and art fairs including Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair in London, Building Bridges Art Exchange in Los Angeles and Ankara Art Fair, as well as exhibitions across Tehran and Istanbul. Her work continues to evolve across drawing, painting, printmaking and textiles, exploring the relationship between the human form, material and transformation.
