Kamila's approach has led to works that are both innovative and rooted in tradition: silk-fringed panels, sculptural mesh tapestries, and site-specific installations where embroidery interacts with light, scale, and architectural space. Her work continues to push embroidery beyond conventional boundaries, developing pieces that act as both cultural archive and contemporary expression.
Kamilah Ahmed is a London-based British Bangladeshi textile artist and embroidery designer whose work sits at the intersection of functional design and artistic expression, spanning interiors, fashion, and collectible design.
With a background in couture fashion, designing for Dior, Valentino, and The Attico, her approach to interiors blends precise craftsmanship with expressive detailing. Most recently, she led embroidery design development at de Gournay, translating her couture sensibility into bespoke wall coverings and spatial textiles. From her Holborn studio at Cockpit Arts, she now focuses on bespoke creations, collaborations, and commissions that place heritage crafts in contemporary interior contexts
She creates objects using threadwork, beading, appliqué, cutwork, and experimental fabric manipulations. Inspired by the Bangladeshi art of Jamdani weaving, Kamilah juxtaposes contemporary techniques with handmade methods to explore the boundaries between hybridity and heritage. Kamilah’s works incorporate traditional embroidery techniques such as Ari hook use. Collaboration is integral: projects often involve partnerships with interior designers, architects, and master craftspeople in the UK and South-East Asia. Her embroidery practice is “centered around hand-making, people, and collaboration.” Depending on scale, Kamilah coordinates artisans whose expertise spans ari hook embroidery, raffia, goldwork, beadwork, and experimental digital processes, enabling the studio to adapt to both intimate and large commissions.
Kamilah Ahmed is an expert artisan: she began her career in 2015 and she started teaching in 2022.
