Sculpting with Discarded Textiles with Yahvi Duggal

A textile sculpture workshop exploring how discarded fabrics and everyday remnants can be transformed through coiling, wrapping and stitching.

About the Workshop

Sculpting with Discarded Textiles is an artist-led workshop by London-based textile artist Yahvi Duggal, exploring the creative possibilities of materials that might otherwise be thrown away.

Using discarded fabrics and textile remnants, participants will experiment with wrapping, coiling and stitching to create tactile three-dimensional forms. Through colour, texture and shape, the workshop encourages participants to reconsider familiar materials and discover how they can be transformed through making.

Drawing on Yahvi’s sustainable textile practice, the workshop places an emphasis on experimentation, resourcefulness and material awareness, inviting participants to think differently about waste, value and the stories materials can carry.

The Workshop Journey

Participants will be introduced to Yahvi’s practice and her approach to working with discarded and unconventional materials before exploring the basic techniques of coiling, wrapping and joining textiles.

Through a rhythmic process of building and shaping, participants will gradually transform fabric remnants into their own sculptural forms. Rather than working towards a prescribed outcome, they will be encouraged to respond intuitively to the materials, experimenting with combinations of colour, texture, scale and form.

The workshop will create space for individual expression while encouraging a wider conversation about reuse, sustainability and our relationship with everyday materials.

What Participants Will Explore

  • Textile sculpture techniques including coiling, wrapping and stitching
  • Creative reuse of discarded fabrics and textile remnants
  • Texture, colour and form through hands-on experimentation
  • Material storytelling and the histories carried by everyday objects
  • Sustainable making and new ways of thinking about waste and value
  • Creative confidence through intuitive and resourceful making

Through the process of transforming discarded textiles into new sculptural forms, participants will be encouraged to look differently at the materials around them and consider their potential beyond their original use.

The workshop creates space for experimentation and personal expression while opening conversations around resourcefulness, sustainability and our relationship with the things we choose to keep or discard.

About Yahvi Duggal

Yahvi Duggal is a London-based Indian textile artist and educator whose practice explores sustainability, material transformation and the creative potential of waste.

Through Peel Studio, which she describes as both her home and laboratory, Yahvi experiments with discarded and everyday materials, including kitchen waste, natural fibres and surplus textiles, transforming them through biomaterial processes, natural dyeing and hand-weaving. Her practice draws on traditions of zero-waste living she grew up with in India, reinterpreting them through a contemporary approach to textile making.

Yahvi holds an MA in Textiles from the Royal College of Art and a Bachelor’s degree in Textile Design from the National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi. Her experience includes working with artisans and communities in India on natural dyeing, sustainable production and skills development, including projects supporting women from low-income communities.

Her work encourages a slower and more conscious relationship with materials, bringing together craft, ecology, tradition and experimentation to reconsider what we value and what we discard.
