Echoes of Migration - Public Art

Echoes of Migration is a new initiative by Art Voyage CIC that is dedicated to celebrating migrant narratives through site-specific and public sculptural works.

We will place sculpture at its core, drawing on its power to give form and understanding to the nuances of identity and movement.

We will showcase three new sculptural works by Alice Burnhope, Ryan Hawaii, and Vladimir Lalić with connections to the London Borough of Lewisham. Through accessible, participatory sculpture, our project aims to foster belonging, reclaim public space, and transform shared environments into lasting cultural assets.

The summit takes place before the Echoes of Migration Summit 2025. Find out more about that event here.

Featured Artists

Vladimir Lalić

Vladimir Lalić is a London-based Serbian multidisciplinary artist who channels personal experiences of war and displacement into his practice. For Echoes of Migration, he will create delicate, dragonfly-shaped installations within the River Quaggy at Manor House Gardens, referencing Lewisham’s historic ties to migration while celebrating resilience and progress. The concept centres on a species of imagined creatures symbolising the transformative power of migration. These creatures are inspired by both the mass migrations caused by the breakup of Yugoslavia and natural phenomena like Cvetanje Tise (the blooming of the Tisa River). This spectacle of mayfly emergence represents fleeting beauty, resilience, and the interconnectedness of ecosystems.

Alice Burnhope

Alice Burnhope is an award-winning textile artist celebrated for her participatory and community-focused projects. Her artistic practice explores sustainability, community engagement, and the sensory human experience through tactile, immersive artworks.
In Echoes of Migration, she will lead a hands-on workshop centred on the question: “What connects you to this land and to each other?” Through collaborative crafting, Burnhope will invite attendees to reflect on the layered history of Manor House Gardens and give voice to the stories that shape Lewisham’s diverse communities.

Alice will also lead a community workshop during the unveiling event, inviting residents to co-create our third sculptural installation that will be exhibited at the Museum of the Home and Lewisham Library, extending the reach of the project into civic and cultural spaces. Learn more about the workshop here.

Ryan Hawaii

Ryan Hawaii is a British-Jamaican/Cuban artist with Windrush heritage who lives in Lewisham. His practice spans painting, textiles, fashion, and music, tackling themes of identity, struggle, and gentrification. For Echoes of Migration, Hawaii will collaborate with the community to craft a vibrant piece that merges beloved local landmarks with images of local heroes, small businesses, and the flag colours of different migrant communities represented in Lewisham. The final work will be installed on a park bench as a permanent tribute to Lewisham’s cultural tapestry.
